Artists seem to prove time and time again that music can be both melodic and meaningful. Such is emphasized within the work of rapper, artist, and director Aminé. Showcased on his new critically acclaimed album Limbo, Aminé’s track “Woodlawn,” features a gritty beat and a ferocious flow. The track's title refers to the artist’s hometown of Portland, making it all the more noteworthy that the video showcases him within Portland’s Woodlawn Park. The fourth track on the album to be granted a music video, Aminé never fails to complement a banging tune with upbeat and colorful visuals.
Where “Woodlawn” is concerned, everything from the music video to the track itself speaks directly to the times. From the lyrical referencing of the passing of Los Angeles Lakers player, Kobe Bryant, that shook the world at the start of this year to Aminé’s COVID conscious, mask-clad crew within the visual, it's sure to resonate. Not only this, but the camerawork is striking as each set transports viewers to a new place of intrigue: the artist's childhood basketball court, killing it on some snowmobiles, tearing it up at local hot spots and many, many more. teeming with references to Aminé’s ties to Portland, this is clearly a personal piece.
Taking to Jimmy Kimmel Live! To perform "Woodlawn" in a global flag and religious symbol-clad air balloon, Aminé further weaves in personal ties and cultural significance to his work by celebrating difference. This was done to honor George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland.
