The modeling industry has always been known for leaning towards more slim figures. Many believe the average model should have minimal body fat, a slender shape, and ample legs. That notion is slowly dissipating from the zeitgeist thanks to talent like Steven Green, or popularly known as Steven G, who is burlier than the traditional model.
Steven G, a photographer, creative director, and model, wanted to be a psychologist or singer at a young age. However, his love for photography prompted him to expand his interests within that field, both in front and behind the camera, birthing Steven G the model.
As we are currently witnessing, past theories of the ideal model seem to have fallen flat. People want to see confident figures who are happy in their own skin modeling clothes. Not to mention, the lack of plus-size high fashion clothing could no longer go unacknowledged. “I can count on my hand the number of stores or brands that actually carry an XXL. If they do, more than likely the clothes are not at all as fashionable as straight size clothes. You definitely feel a restriction when wanting to truly express creative freedom with clothing,” Steven said.
Exclusivity can cripple a brand by closing off their products to a certain group of people, especially regarding the size. A brand that displays their fondness for diversity and inclusivity is bound to get the widest range of attention. This is what Rihanna did when she introduced the world to Steven, as well as a plethora of other unconventional models with diverse and real bodies. Nobody could have predicted the amount of attention some of these models would receive, but now it's time to learn.
"Honestly, no. I had no idea the shoot would go viral. In my mind, they were just e-comm shots. No one would really care or take notice. But little did I know, this moment is what millions of people have been waiting on," Steven shared. To his surprise, his spike in popularity and attention came rapidly. Steven was then able to showcase his modeling prowess in Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Fashion Show on October 2nd, 2020.
With Steven now on the radar of so many, his popularity has skyrocketed. This shocked him since he did not expect such a positive reaction, however stepping out of his comfort zone came with a great upside. "Honestly, thus far, the Savage X Fenty campaign has been my biggest accomplishment! Not just for my career but on a personal level as well. I have never been shirtless online before ever. So this was a big moment for me to face my insecurities and jump fully with confidence and faith," Steven expressed. In order to produce, he had to muscle the confidence to be shot shirtless for public access. This campaign may have been a huge opportunity equipped with equal intimidation, but Steven overcame his self-doubt and did it with style.
When discussing the topic of his newfound fame, he humbly mentioned his desire to inspire others like him, "I’ve always loved being behind the scenes, connecting the dots for other people to showcase their best self. However, I am grateful to have the platform to inspire others like myself."
"What turned out to be something for me, turned into something so much bigger for the entire world," he said of his impact. “Being a black man of size, there was next to none regarding representation. So to see that shifting and the major impact that is it having for society is amazing to see."
Steven is a part of a modeling revolution that will shift standards and create more opportunities for those normally left behind. He tells those who chose to follow his steps, “first know that this is something that you want to get into and will be able to commit to because you hear more no's than yes and that can wear and tear on a person. If you are sure this is the industry you want to pursue then go hard at it! Don’t cut any corners. Do the necessary things to create an amazing book, take care of your personal health, and overall have fun with it and be your best self!”
Regardless of feeling overlooked in the past, he has succeeded in one of the toughest lines of work, as well as created a multitude of opportunities for himself. Inspiring is not the word, "I haven’t seen anyone ever in my life look like me working with a high fashion brand,” Steven mentioned.
Besides dabbling in the fashion world, he has about 10 years of experience in the photography field as a creative director and wardrobe styling. His future includes plans to launch a marketing agency alongside his wife, Jasmine, with intentions to continuously spread the message of inclusivity as well as self-confidence. A man with big goals and big dreams, his ideal opportunities include, “Kanye, June Ambrose, Kolin Carter, Balenziaga, Pyer Moss, Fendi, Vogue, and Versace just to name a few.”
Unintentionally, Steven has challenged the stereotype and further highlighting the need for more inclusive spaces. "I want to make way for other aspiring brawn models. I don’t want my platform to just be about me because it isn’t. I was just a pioneer to a movement that’s so much bigger than myself. I want to give hope to others and inspire people to not only love their bodies but to truly love themselves and embrace their God-given abilities."
“I’d love to capture the message of self-acceptance. To know that no matter your size, disability, or insecurities, God made you perfect and dope in every way. Do not let the standards of society keep you from being your confident and talented self”
