As the year almost comes to an end, it may present that more negative events occurred, but if you look closely there’s always a positive to every negative; one of these positives being Lakeyah dropping her new mix-tape Times Up; a mixtape in which she raps about struggles and being what she masters, a Bad Bitch.

Blessing our ears, the ten-track mix-tape samples Hip-Hop and R&B, including her hit-song “Female Goat” featuring the amazing duo City Girls.

Many definitions define the words “Bad Bitch,” referencing Lakeyah’s mix-tape, a Bad Bitch is someone confident, understands the struggle, and literally does not give a Shit.

Upon listening to Times Up, I connected to the Milwaukee-based artist in terms of making it through. Learning the struggles, Lakeyah gives us a background behind this Bad and Boujie artist. The overall soul of the mixtape has to be the second song “Hit Different,” Lakeyah took us into her life journey of coming up, starting from the bottom, rapping as a child, living in and out of apartments, and celebrating Christmas in churches.

She raps about her transition as a rapper now and how it has overcome these struggling times. “Ain’t have a plan but something in me said it’s best if you move. Less than a year and I got signed; that’s a dream come true. Ain’t nobody show me love, I had to show them the proof," as one of her lyrics go.

It did hit different as a pose to realizing we all start from somewhere. Not everyone’s journey is similar but it’s similar in the sense of working hard and staying persistent in our dreams.

Switching from soulful melody, Lakeyah still manages to revive the bad bitch within us. The hard-hitting song “Basic,” flexes on what Lakeyah refers to as "Basic Hoes.” Throwing bars on luxury, fame, living lavishly while others are just basic. Here is where the expression of not giving a shit comes along. It’s clear that Lakeyah gives no thought to others because as long as she’s on top, nobody else matters. Haters will always hate on confidence because confidence is what blocks fear and exceeds our dreams.

On top of this, Lakeyah takes us down the memory lane of exes. The bittersweet memories in which we all avoid to remember. The Jazmine Sullivan inspired song "Windows,” showcases that our exes will truly regret losing a baddie like us as she raps about an ex exposing his true colors through lies and cheating.

Her hard-hitting lyrics and appealing beats are why I recommend this mix-tape to everyone; listening to stories from a female perspective blooms inspiration and connection. Transitioning from soft melodies to hard rapping, Lakeyah’s new mix-tape Times Up reminds us that life’s challenges can turn someone into a bad bitch. Could be struggling to make it, facing haters, going through heartbreaks, without these events, there wouldn’t be a bad bitch.

Lakeyah surpasses her ability of natural talent with this mixtape; expose your inner bad ass and listen to Times Up now streaming on all platforms!
