From Saweetie, Rico Nasty, Flo Milli, and so many others, all I can focus on is female rappers and currently, the talent is immense! Female rappers truly make some of the best music and it's hard not to notice. But when one stands out, attention must be paid. For example, the Bronx born and bred rapper, Wona Lisa.
Stepping into character, Wo is creating the life she'd dream about. "I’ve always wanted to be in a music video, so I decided to freestyle over a beat & create my own music video," she said on her Instagram. After much hard work and long nights, she dropped her first freestyle video "Shake It" winning everyone over with her skill.
The bumping freestyle rap is a great addition to your hot girl summer playlist. With fire-spitting lyrics she makes rap look easy as her brown skin becomes a magnet for the camera. While it's the very beginning of her journey, we caught up with Wona Lisa to talk all things from where she gets her inspiration, her impact, and the future.
What was the inspiration behind your first release "Shake It"?
My inspiration behind “Shake It” was to create something different for me. I felt accustomed to a certain lifestyle. “Shake It” has inspired me to get my toes wet, it has challenged me to become an actual artist. The inspiration to become an artist was due to the environment I was born and raised in - Bronx, New York where talent is evident, and hard work is a top characteristic. I have to give credit to my city!
Tell us about your musical style, what do you want to give the world through your music? What impact do you want to leave on people?
My music style is very versatile. I am looking to develop creative ways towards other genres of music. I would like to work with K-POP artist, Latin Artist, Reggae, Rock, all of the above. That’s what creates a creative person. When you’re able to dive into different creative areas and kill it. You’re destined for great success. You cannot absolutely let your comfort zone kill you, you have to be uncomfortable to get comfortable. I would like the world to know that you should always try before you quit. You should always listen to yourself because others will try to break you before you even start your success journey. You have to be strong in the face of adversity because the world is designed for us to learn life lessons. Being strong is the absolute way to win this game called life!
As a dark skin Black girl, do you feel like it's harder to break into the rap industry as opposed to your lighter counterparts?
As a Black woman. I never felt limited to my opportunities because of the color of my skin, and the gender of my soul. Being raised by a strong black woman has taught me to face adversity through kindness. Society treats black women as if we are less fortunate and incapable of success. My strong black mother would always recite to me as a young girl. “You’re cut from a different cloth, don’t let anyone make you feel like a minority.” That’s why I never agreed with the term “minority.” Black people are not minor, we are major deals in society. Ever since then, I never felt limited to my beliefs. It’s really important for black mothers to love their black children. Our confidence stems from childhood, we cannot become our traumas. I do feel like it will be a challenge to break into the industry. Black women have to work 10x times harder to get the recognition we deserve, but I am totally up for the challenge! I am a Queen!
What pushes you to continue through all the bullshit?
What pushes me to continue through it all? I know there’s someone out there who has probably been kicked down repeatedly in life. I am pushing for the little girls who have been traumatized in life, I am pushing through because I want success over poverty. I want love over materialistic items. I am pushing because my life is designed for greatness, and I know it because of the faith instilled in my blood. I can’t stop, won’t stop until I reach the top. I want others to look at me, and understand they can do anything possible until they try!
What advice do you have for any young women like yourself who have wanted to put out a song, but may have insecurities about doing so?
The insecurities will always be presented. No matter what new venture you decided to take on. The only advice I can give, and it may sound redundant. I really want every girl striving for success to absolutely believe in yourself. Don’t even seek advice because advice can sometimes instill fear onto your dreams. Then, you become insecure & now you’re ready to quit. Follow your heart, and open your mind. If you’re really feeling stuck. Always pick up a book that can help clear your mind or journal your feelings until you feel confident again! Always believe in yourself, no matter if others believe your craft is wack. Believe it’s the best thing you’ve ever created. Let your work speak, someone is going to feel it. Can we expect new music from you soon in the future?
Yesss! I have some new music for the gals & guys out there. I want everyone to dance to music and just feel free. I am excited to see what the future holds. I can’t stop, won’t stop until I reach the top. That’s on period! love you all.
